  302.           2 INTRODUCTION
  303.  
  304.           UPDATE is a utility program used to install all the various
  305.           anti-virus programs that have been developed by McAfee
  306.           Associates.
  307.  
  308.           UPDATE does more than just copy the programs onto the harddisk
  309.           for you, it examines your harddisk and locates every copy of the
  310.           McAfee programs for you, even on multiple harddisks and across
  311.           networks.  (At this time UPDATE only replaces the first
  312.           occurrence of each program found.)
  313.  
  314.           Once the programs have been located UPDATE will (by default)
  315.           confirm each replacement or (optionally) you may have UPDATE
  316.           replace all selected files without confirmation.
  317.  
  318.           UPDATE can be run interactively, from the command-line using
  319.           command-line switches to select options, or even from a DOS batch
  320.           file.  UPDATE also contains built-in context-sensitive help,
  321.           meaning that when you ask for help what you get is relevant to
  322.           what you were doing at the time.
  323.  
  324.           UPDATE was designed to run from a floppy disk and therefore will
  325.           not install programs TO a floppy disk.  UPDATE was designed to be
  326.           efficient and small enough to fit onto a low-density non-bootable
  327.           (360K) diskette complete with it's help file and leave enough
  328.           room for the various McAfee programs to be installed onto a
  329.           harddisk.
  330.  
  331.           NOTE:     The Banyan Vines network also contains a file called
  332.                     SCAN.EXE.  When using UPDATE on the Banyan Vines
  333.                     network we recommend that you DO NOT turn off the
  334.                     overwrite confirmation option.

  343.           3 CREATING AN UPDATE DISKETTE
  344.  
  345.           The UPDATE program was designed to operate from a floppy diskette
  346.           where the program would check the harddisk and transfer the
  347.           selected programs to it.
  348.  
  349.           To create an update disk you will need: 
  350.  
  351.                * a blank formatted diskette (360K minimum size)
  352.                * the McAfee programs you wish to install
  353.                * an available computer with a diskette drive
  354.  
  355.           For this example I will assume that you have an AT style computer
  356.           with one 5¼ inch 1.2MB diskette drive and a 40MB harddisk with MS
  357.           DOS 3.3 installed in a subdirectory called "C:\DOS".
  358.  
  359.           Step 1:   Make sure that the computer is on and that you see the
  360.                     DOS prompt on the screen (i.e. "C:\>").
  361.  
  362.           Step 2:   Switch to the DOS subdirectory with the Change
  363.                     Directory command "CD \DOS".  This will change the
  364.                     prompt to read "C:\DOS>".
  365.  
  366.           Step 3:   Put the diskette that you wish to use as the update
  367.                     disk in drive A: and close the door.
  368.  
  369.           Step 4:   Format the diskette with the command "FORMAT A:".  This
  370.                     will prepare the disk to be used by the computer.  When
  371.                     the formatting completes answer "N" to the question of
  372.                     formatting another disk.  Now remove that diskette and
  373.                     place it aside.  
  374.  
  375.           Step 5:   Insert the UPDATE disk and type the DOS command
  376.                     "DISKCOPY A: A:" (some versions of DISKCOPY do not
  377.                     automatically format a diskette, if your does you can
  378.                     skip step 4).
  379.  
  380.                     DISKCOPY will prompt you for a source diskette (which
  381.                     is your diskette with the UPDATE program on it) and the
  382.                     target diskette (which is the blank disk you used in
  383.                     step 3).
  384.  
  385.                     When DISKCOPY finishes you will have two diskettes that
  386.                     have the UPDATE program and help file on it.
  387.  
  388.           Step 6:   Now remove your UPDATE disk and insert one of the
  389.                     McAfee Associates program diskettes.  Copy the program
  390.                     file to your update disk with the command:
  391.  
  392.                     "COPY A:<program>.EXE B:"

  402.                     Replace the "<program>" label with the name of the
  403.                     McAfee program that you are copying which is CHKSHLD,
  404.                     CLEAN, NETSCAN, SCAN, VSHIELD or VSHIELD1.

  406.                     You will be prompted when to change disks. Just
  407.                     remember that the McAfee diskette is considered the
  408.                     source and that the UPDATE disk is considered the
  409.                     target.
  410.  
  411.           Step 7:   Repeat step 6 for each program you wish to copy to the
  412.                     update diskette.
  413.  
  414.           When you finish copying the files, if you've installed all the
  415.           programs your UPDATE diskette should have the following files:

  461.           4 RUNNING UPDATE

  463.           First ensure that you have a clean (virus-free) system by either
  464.           running SCAN or NETSCAN on the harddisk or by booting up the
  465.           computer from a clean DOS diskette and then running SCAN or
  466.           NETSCAN.
  467.  
  468.           Once the system has been determined to be virus-free and you have
  469.           created your UPDATE diskette, you are ready to begin.  Running
  470.           UPDATE is as easy as 1) starting the program, 2) selecting the
  471.           files to update and 3) beginning the update process.

  473.           4.1 Starting the Program
  474.  
  475.           Insert your UPDATE diskette in the drive and make that drive the
  476.           default drive by typing "A:" if your diskette is in drive A or
  477.           "B:" if your diskette is in drive B.
  478.  
  479.           Start the program by typing "UPDATE" at the DOS prompt and
  480.           pressing the ENTER key on the keyboard.

  496.           internally and it checks the default drive to see which programs
  497.           are available for installation.  When UPDATE finishes it presents
  498.           the main program screen.

  520.           The UPDATE screen is divided up into four distinct areas.  These
  521.           are:
  522.  
  523.           MENU BAR:  This is where you will use the mouse or the keyboard
  524.           to select from the pull-down menus, and initiate the various
  525.           features and functions of UPDATE.
  526.  
  527.           DISPLAY WINDOW:  This is the largest area of the screen and is
  528.           where you will see the results of any selections you make.
  529.  
  530.           STATUS LINE:  This is where UPDATE will communicate any of its
  531.           information to you the user.
  532.

  537.           At the top right of the display is the current time displayed in
  538.           HH:MM:SS as read from the system clock.  It displays in 24hr or
  539.           military time (i.e. 0-11 are am times and 12-23 are pm times).

  541.           4.2 Selecting files to update
  542.  
  543.           Selecting files in UPDATE is done through the SETUP menu or from
  544.           the command-line with the commands:  /ALL, /CHKSHLD, /CLEAN,
  545.           /NETSCAN, /SCAN, /VSHIELD or /SHIELD1.
  546.  
  547.           When selecting files interactively, pull-down the SETUP menu and
  548.           move the highlight over the individual programs that you wish to
  549.           install.  
  550.  
  551.           You may notice that the highlight bar will skip over some
  552.           commands, or that some menu items don't contain a highlighted
  553.           letter.  This is a feature of UPDATE that deactivates any program
  554.           menu item when the corresponding program is not found in the
  555.           startup drive/directory.  Shown below is a partial representation
  556.           of the SETUP menu.

  580.           toggle the "No" to "Yes" by pressing the ENTER key.  When the
  581.           menu item is set to "No" then that program will not be installed
  582.           onto the harddisk.  If the menu item is set to "Yes" then that
  583.           program WILL be installed onto the harddisk.

  585.           4.3 Beginning the Update Process
  586.  
  587.           Once you have selected the files you want to install from either
  588.           the SETUP menu or the command-line.  Use the left/right arrow key
  589.           to select the UPDATE menu item and press ENTER. 
  590.  
  591.           If no programs have been selected on the SETUP menu prior to
  592.           selecting the UPDATE menu item an error message will be displayed
  593.           on the status line.
  594.  
  595.           When a valid command is enter on the command-line UPDATE will
  596.           automatically begin the update process.  You will not have to
  597.           select it after the program starts.
  598.  
  599.           4.4 Using the Mouse and Keyboard
  600.  
  601.           If you have a mouse connected to your computer and the mouse
  602.           driver has been loaded you will see a small rectangle on the
  603.           screen.  This is your mouse cursor.  Clicking the left button on
  604.           any of the items on the menu bar will pull-down the menu or
  605.           perform the action associated with that name.  When a menu is
  606.           pulled down clicking the left button when the mouse cursor is on
  607.           a menu item will perform that action.
  608.  
  609.           If you have selected a pull-down menu and then change your mind
  610.           you can either click the left mouse button on a different menu to
  611.           open it instead or click the right mouse button to close that
  612.           menu altogether.
  613.  
  614.           You will also notice that some of letters on the menu bar are
  615.           displayed in a contrasted color with the rest of the text
  616.           (highlighted on monochrome monitors), these are called hotkeys
  617.           pressing this key on the keyboard will pull-down the menu
  618.           associated with this menu item.  When a menu is pulled down and
  619.           you press the hotkey listed on the menu it will perform that
  620.           action.

  622.           Also for the keyboard you will notice that one of the menu bar
  623.           selections is shown in reverse-video.  This is called the menu
  624.           highlight and indicates which option will be activated by
  625.           pressing the ENTER key.

  628.           and press ENTER or you can press the hotkeys.

  747.           at least one of the program files it will default to installing

  760.           harddisk or even on different harddisks each program would then

  762.           during the search.  By default UPDATE confirms each overwrite.

  764.           If no McAfee programs were located on the harddisk then UPDATE
  765.           attempts to read the "PATH=" statement in the DOS environment and
  766.           will install all the selected files into the first directory
  767.           listed in the "PATH=" line.

  769.           If no "PATH=" line has been defined then UPDATE will install all
  770.           the program files into the root directory of drive C:.
  771.  
  772.           5.2 Included drive(s) list
  773.  
  774.           When this option is selected from the Update menu or the [F3] key
  775.           is pressed UPDATE will display the list of drives that it will
  776.           search and allow you to edit it.  The "Included drive(s) list"
  777.           menu option allows you to explicitly set the list of hard
  778.           drive(s) that the UPDATE program will search.

  780.           It's okay to have drives in the list that don't physically exists
  781.           because UPDATE performs a validation check for each drive. if the
  782.           drive cannot be accessed then UPDATE will not attempt to scan
  783.           that drive.

  816.           enter in new information rather than edit the old information,
  817.           and it will clear the line before storing the new text.

  819.           If you use any edit function (such as the arrow keys) then UPDATE
  820.           assumes that you wish to edit the existing text and it will NOT
  821.           clear the line.  This is called "conditional" editing.

  823.           The following editing commands are available when editing or
  824.           entering the drive list:

  826.            ,  arrow   - move 1 character to the left or the right.
  827.           Backspace   - delete character to the left.
  828.           Ctrl-R      - restore field to original contents.

  832.           Esc         - abort data entry, leaves field unchanged.

  836.           5.3 Define Installation path

  838.           The "Define installation path" menu option when selected will
  839.           display an input window on the screen that prompts you to enter
  840.           in the directory where you would like to store the McAfee program
  841.           files.  The directory you specify must already exists on the
  842.           harddisk.  UPDATE will not create it.
  843.  
  844.           When this path is defined then UPDATE will skip the harddisk scan
  845.           and will attempt to install the program files directly into the
  846.           specified directory.
  847.  
  848.           To have UPDATE resume scanning the harddisks, you must undefine
  849.           this path.  To do so, select this option then press Ctrl-U to
  850.           delete the field and ENTER to accept the changes to the field. 
  851.           UPDATE will now resume drive scanning.

  853.           NOTE:     This path is automatically defined after each program
  854.                     installation run.

  856.           5.4 Scan network drive(s)

  966.           modify the way UPDATE works.  Similarly you select these options
  967.           by highlighting and pressing ENTER, or by using the mouse as

  972.           color settings to a diskfile named "UPDATE.INI" to the drive and

  1119.                     files to be copied that are selected by the user.

  1121.           6.9 Install all the programs
  1122.  
  1123.           The "Install all the programs" option toggles between "Yes" and
  1124.           "No".  If it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will ignore
  1125.           the settings of the individual programs and will install all the
  1126.           anti-virus programs that were located on the startup drive and
  1127.           directory.

  1129.           If the option is set to "No" then the UPDATE program will not
  1130.           ignore the individual settings of the programs and will install
  1131.           only those programs that have been selected AND exist on the
  1132.           startup drive and directory.

  1134.           6.10 Display current time as
  1135.  
  1136.           The "Display current time as" option toggles between "12hr"  and
  1137.           "24hr".  If it is set to "12hr" then the system clock in  the
  1138.           upper-right corner of the screen will display the time  in
  1139.           standard 12 hour format (i.e. 4:30 PM).

  1141.           If it is set to "24hr" then the system clock will display the
  1142.           time in a 24 hour or military time format HH:MM:SS (hours,
  1143.           minutes, seconds, i.e. 16:30:00 is 4:30pm).

  1145.           NOTE:     When the time is displayed in 24hr format, all hours
  1146.                     between 0 and 11 represent AM or morning times and all
  1147.                     hours between 12 and 23 represent PM or evening times.

  1171.           The "Modify current colors..." option when selected will display
  1172.           a secondary menu of each of the main areas of the screen where
  1173.           colors can be changed.

  1175.           Once an area is selected then UPDATE will display a color
  1176.           selection window where the new color is selected from.  The
  1177.           operator merely moves to the desired color and presses the ENTER
  1178.           key.  When all the desired areas have been changed then select
  1179.           the "Use as Default Settings" to make these color changes
  1180.           permanent.

  1182.           When the color configuration menu is displayed (as shown on the
  1183.           next page) a color table is also displayed next to it showing the
  1184.           current color selections of each of the color items on the menu.

  1188.           be encircled by a box and can be moved with the arrow keys.

  1528.           total hands off installation.  To use command-line options simply
  1529.           enter each option on the same line with UPDATE separated with a
  1530.           space.
